STS Crane Short Rail | Precision & Stability Solution for Hinge Connections
A Critical Connecting Component for Heavy-Duty Track Systems
The two sections achieve a perfect fit through high-precision machining. Since the crane’s boom must rotate and lift relative to the girder, traditional continuously welded rails cannot adapt to this movable gap. The core value of the short rail lies in filling this track discontinuity, providing continuous and smooth traveling support for the trolley, and serving as an indispensable critical connecting component in the STS crane track system.
Why Is Short Rail a Must for STS Cranes?
- Solve Track Discontinuity Issues: Address the problem of track interruption caused by the movable gap between the boom and girder, replacing continuous welded rails that cannot adapt to hinge rotation. It ensures the trolley receives continuous wheel load support at the discontinuity, avoiding suspension impact or jamming during passage.
- Adapt to Special Working Conditions: The main girder of STS cranes exhibits significant elastic deflection during operation. Using conventional rigid crane rails (such as QU and KP series) will inevitably lead to rail fatigue cracking, flange chipping, joint misalignment, increased vibration and noise, and frequent maintenance with high downtime costs. The modular design of Short Rails can perfectly adapt to this characteristic.
- Absorb Dynamic Impact Loads: Targeting the trolley’s operating characteristics of high-speed shuttling (5–10 m/s) and frequent start-stop cycles, the Short Rail can effectively absorb instantaneous impact energy, reduce local stress and wear on rails, wheels, and crane structures, and lower equipment failure risks.
- Improve Overall Operational Efficiency: The smooth transition design reduces vibration and noise, minimizes unplanned maintenance caused by track connection issues, ensures 24/7 high-frequency operation of cranes, increases cargo handling throughput, and extends the effective operating time of equipment.
Core Features & Technical Advantages
Mainly adopts 42CrMo4 medium-carbon Cr-Mo alloy steel (EN 10083-3 standard).
After quenching and tempering, its yield strength ≥930MPa and tensile strength 1080–1300MPa, combining ultra-high strength, toughness and fatigue resistance for port heavy-load impacts.
Optional crane-grade rail steel or high-strength structural steel is available, with surface hardening or wear-resistant overlay welding to enhance wheel-rail wear resistance and service life.
Two-Piece Precision Matching: High-precision machining ensures perfectly fitted interfaces, minimizing trolley transition deviations and enabling impact-free passage.
Low-Defect Running Surface: Precision grinding controls geometric tolerances, reducing rail surface irregularities and vibration for stable operation.
Reinforced Impact Zones: Thickened or welded wear-resistant liners disperse impact loads and extend vulnerable part service life.
Post-Installation Adjustment: Optimized clamping system allows ±5mm lateral adjustment for on-site precise alignment and error correction.
Diverse Installation: Supports bolt, welding or clamping installation, fitting single/dual-box girder crane structures.
Full Rail Compatibility: Tailor-made for A75, A100, A120 and flat bar rails, no extra track modifications needed.
Ultra-Long Durability: Withstands over 2 million container movement cycles, service life matches long rails, no separate replacement required.
Modular Design: 3–6m per section, integrated via precision positioning and floating installation, adapting to girder elastic deformation.

Complete System Supporting, One-Stop Supply Guarantee
The stable operation of Short Rails cannot do without complete supporting components. We provide one-stop supply services of “Short Rails + supporting accessories” to ensure overall system compatibility and reliability:
Specialized fixtures such as our heavy-duty rail clips can firmly anchor Short Rails to steel sole plates and main girder structures, withstanding vertical wheel loads, lateral forces, and cyclic vibrations generated during high-speed trolley operation, completely eliminating the risk of rail slippage or loosening.
Customized steel sole plates are used to ensure structural stability. When permanent deformation occurs on the groove support surface, two solutions are available: first, adding 1–2 mm thick metal shims as filler material at specific locations; second, machining filler plates of varying thicknesses through milling processes.
Fix Blocks restrict the axial displacement of Short Rails, maintaining long-term alignment accuracy between rails and trolley wheel sets; End Stoppers limit the maximum travel of the trolley, absorb end-of-travel impacts, and prevent overtravel risks.
Including high-precision shims, shock-absorbing pads, connecting bolts, and other complete accessories to meet full installation needs.
